- Walmart launches FAST Packaging Program to drive sustainable innovation and reduce plastic waste.
- The retailer calls on packaging providers to submit innovative solutions for the new trial programs.

It seems like Walmart has been at the forefront of driving packaging innovation for decades, continually seeking ways to reduce waste, improve efficiency, and enhance sustainability. The massive retailer has set industry standards from its early adoption of reusable plastic containers (RPCs) over 20 years ago to demanding lightweight packaging solutions. The company’s pioneering efforts include the launch of a comprehensive packaging scorecard and early implementation of RFID technology on packaging to streamline inventory management and reduce environmental impact. These initiatives underscore Walmart’s commitment to leading positive change in the retail sector.
Walmart’s history of packaging innovation is marked by its strategic initiatives that have influenced the industry. The introduction of RPCs revolutionized how products were transported, significantly reducing the need for single-use packaging. In addition, Walmart’s packaging scorecard, launched in 2006, encouraged suppliers to improve their packaging sustainability by evaluating criteria such as greenhouse gas emissions, product-to-package ratio, and the use of renewable energy. The early use of RFID on packaging further demonstrated Walmart’s dedication to improving supply chain efficiency and reducing waste.
Continuing its legacy of innovation, Walmart has announced a new initiative to accelerate packaging innovation and sustainability. The “Finding Actionable Solutions for Trial” (FAST) Packaging Program is designed to discover and test new, innovative packaging solutions, particularly in areas where Design for Recycling/Composting is needed or where there is potential to reduce the use of virgin plastic.
Packaging innovation is a critical component of reducing plastic use without sacrificing quality or efficacy
In its latest effort to accelerate this innovation, Walmart has launched a new initiative called the FAST Packaging Program. The FAST Packaging Program aims to find and trial new, innovative packaging solutions in areas where Design for Recycling/Composting is needed and/or where there may be an opportunity to reduce the use of virgin plastic.
Applicants are asked to submit their solutions to Walmart’s Circular Connector tool by June 28th to be considered for a pilot.
