The role of paper based packaging for Tesco and prospects for reusables

Stephen Pizer of Tesco, a speaker at Paperboard Packaging 2010, spoke recently to CEE PACKAGING on the role of paper based packaging. Tesco and other UK grocery distributors were early adopters of reusable transit packaging for grocery distribution, and a model for the development of other grocery industry reusables programs, such as the Svenska Retursystem program in Sweden. Actually, if you go to their website you can see their new lightweight rackable twinsheet plastic pallet. But I’m getting off topic. Here is the interview:

Q : What role does paper-based packaging play in the Tesco sustainability strategy?

Every packaging material has a role to play as each material has characteristics that may make it the optimum packaging material for a particular product. With the number and range of products we stock there is certainly no ‘one size fits all’ solution. However paper based packaging certainly does have positive attributes in terms of being from a renewable source and widely recycled.

Q: What do you see as the main challenges for the paper industry?
