Smurfit Kappa and 3M are in the news for advances in anti-slip tier sheets, innovative point-of-sale packaging, residue free adhesive and high-performance tape for recycled content boxes
Smurfit Kappa and Nestle Waters have jointly won the ‘Innovation for Business’ category at the prestigious Trophee de Achats, an awards program to recognize outstanding achievements between purchasing departments and suppliers. The judging panel consisted of purchasing leaders from renowned companies including SAP, Air France, Accor Hotels, Sodexo, La Poste.
This award recognizes how the two companies worked in partnership to launch an innovative machine solution called the Smurfit Kappa Rotor to achieve mutual commercial benefits. The Rotor has been specially developed to allow reels of anti-slip paper to be cut on demand to the desired pallet size instead of using traditional pre-cut sheets. This solution gives customers maximum flexibility while reducing complexity in the production process.
After the paper is cut to size by the Rotor, the sheet is then positioned between layers of palletised goods to strengthen the stability of products throughout the supply chain. The anti-slip coating used on paper creates high friction and significantly reduces the risk of damage to products.
The Rotor also has the additional benefit of being able to fold a flap on the slip sheet layer which when printed can be used to increase communication with shoppers in the retail environment. In research conducted with 750 customers, having brand messages printed on the layers in a pallet display improves a product’s visibility by 11% and intent to purchase by 27%.
Didier Durcudoy, Smurfit Kappa European Account Director, commented: “This is a very exciting achievement and we are honored to share the award with our partners at Nestlé Waters. The Rotor has brought much excitement to purchasing leaders in the industry, and we continue to put innovation at the heart of our business to maximize success for our customers.”
Eye Catching (and Award Winning) Point of Sale Display
An eye-catching point of sale display for Ribena secured gold for Smurfit Kappa at the UK and Ireland POPAI awards in London.
The brief was to create a visually stimulating presentation that would capture consumers’ attention in the store.
The colorful stand was rolled out in convenience stores across Ireland to ensure maximum visibility for the drink as part of the ‘Ribenary’ marketing campaign.
“We asked Smurfit Kappa to come up with a display that was bold and unique and would unmistakably capture the spirit of the Ribena brand,” said Siobhan Drummond, Senior Brand Manager, of Lucozade Ribena Suntory.
“What they came back with certainly fitted the bill. It was a stand-out display that was impossible to ignore and brought the brand to life.”
Another engaging presentation made by Smurfit Kappa Inspirepac for Walkers Crisps UK captured the judges’ attention at the POPAIs and won silver. The ‘Tear and Share’ display was shaped like a bowl to mirror the sharing bowl feature of the pack.
“It’s fantastic that Smurfit Kappa in Ireland and the UK have come away with both gold and silver at these awards,” said Jonathan Arthur, General Manager, Smurfit Kappa Display (Dublin). “All over the world, our designers are committed to creating products that fuse attractive design with clever functionality, so we’re delighted to get this recognition.
“To hear that both products are already driving sales for our clients is a testament that our instore displays are a fundamental part of retail marketing.” Now in their 10th year, the POPAI Awards celebrate innovation,

New Adhesive Provides Optimal Strength Without Damaging Residue
3M introduces Scotch® Clean Removal Strapping Tape 8899HP at PACK EXPO ST.
Properly securing appliance parts and electronic components is a critical part of the packaging process. Manufacturers need the confidence that the equipment will move from the plant to install without damage, including stains and residue from adhesives. 3M’s new Scotch® Clean Removal Strapping Tape 8899HP offers a long lasting hold with clean removal from a wide variety of surfaces.
“Customers were asking for a product that was easy to apply, allowing users to save time and costs associated with rework,” said Mitch Hallan, US Product Marketer at 3M Industrial Adhesives and Tapes Division. “Applying 3M’s expertise with adhesives, we developed a tape that can reduce costs by ensuring a secure hold with less tape and lessen the risk of residue damage.”
The tape is designed with 3M’s proprietary pressure-sensitive rubber adhesive, which can be applied to and adhere to common surfaces, such as vinyl, painted metal, stainless steel, plastic, and glass. Applied by hand or with a dispenser, Scotch® Clean Removal Strapping Tape 8899HP adheres to hold shelving, racks, doors, panels, electrical cords and other parts in place during the shipping process. It also features a tensilized polypropylene film backing, which provides proper stiffness and resistance to moisture. After exposure to hot and cold conditions, the tape can be successfully removed without leaving a sticky residue or stain.
3M Scotch® Clean Removal Strapping Tape 8899HP is available in a variety of widths and colors. The tape will be showcased at PACK EXPO November 6 – 9. For more information about 3M tapes, visit Booth N-4921 or 3M.com/US.
3M’s New Tape Seals the Deal for Food and Beverage Packaging
Scotch® Box Sealing Tape 311+ seals recycled corrugated boxes and holds through wide temperature variations
The chilly environments for packaging palletized shipments in the food and beverage industries are necessary to preserve perishable goods, but low temperatures can hinder the adhesion of box sealing tapes. 3M’s latest innovation for a broad range of temperature applications is Scotch® Box Sealing Tape 311+, which is specifically designed to tightly seal highly recycled corrugated boxes. 3M Industrial Adhesives and Tapes Division, an exhibitor for the 2016 Pack EXPO, invites attendees to visit booth N-4921 for an exclusive opportunity to experience Scotch® Box Sealing Tape 311+’s industry-changing capabilities. This year’s Pack EXPO trade show is scheduled to take place Nov. 6-9 in Chicago, Ill.
Scotch® Box Sealing Tape 311+ is an industrial packaging tape for box sealing, splicing, recouperage and other demanding packaging applications on light to medium-weight boxes. The tack and adhesion of most other tapes fails when temperatures drop to 40ᵒF. Scotch® Box Sealing Tape 311+ maintains superior hold and adhesive performance in application temperatures +20ᵒF to + 150ᵒF, and operating in -30ᵒF to +150ᵒF, to keep boxes tightly sealed.
“3M is excited to showcase Scotch® Box Sealing Tape 311+ at the 2016 Pack EXPO because it has potential to revolutionize cold temperature packaging applications for food and beverage,” Kaveh Faghihi, U.S. Marketing Manager, 3M. “We believe this innovative tape will be the new staple for sealing highly recycled corrugated boxes.”
When this tape was applied in shipping plants nationwide under varying climate conditions, the tape exhibited consistently high performance in both cold and damp environments’. This tape is economically priced, yet surpassed competitors when tested for shear and adhesion, sticking nearly 1.5 times better than other box sealing tapes on the market. Its new colors help to quickly identify the product throughout the distribution channel.
