Reusable Pallet Lid System Boosts Operations Productivity, Reduces Plastic Wrap Usage by 47%

Penguin Random House was looking for a way to reduce their single-use plastic wrap usage when they came across the Pallet Lid from Loadhog. Penguin found that the Pallet Lid provided dramatic efficiency gains. On average it was taking Penguin 3 minutes to stretch wrap one pallet. With the Pallet Lid they have managed to reduce that down to 20 seconds. Of equal importance, when their customer receives the lid they can remove it within seconds and return it with no time spent organizing the single-use waste plastic.

Tracking the Pallet Lid in a closed-loop network safeguards the longevity of the packaging and furthermore enables Penguin to spread the benefits of this product across the full supply chain, from their suppliers right through to their customers. An RFID chip is attached to the Pallet Lid to enhance the ease of tracking them.

Elimination of plastic wrap and improved vehicle fill

Penguin found that in the first year they reduced their use of consumable stretch wrap by over 47%. They have ambitions to continue improving on this accomplishment by analyzing the recorded data and discovering new ways to remove single-use waste. They hope to reduce usage in the 60% range in the second year compared to before the introduction of the Pallet Lid.

The Pallet Lid enables Penguin and its suppliers to double stack pallets in the vehicle, increasing the goods transported by another layer and reducing the Co2 emissions with fewer vehicles required to transport the same amount of goods.
