Tampa, FL, September 19, 2019: The Reusable Packaging Association (RPA) has issued an industry white paper to provide guidance on current technologies for the identification, monitoring and tracking of reusable transport packaging.  The report, A Smarter, Technology-Driven Supply Chain with Reusable Packaging Systems, is now available for download on the association’s website at reusables.org/reusables-library/reports-and-data.

Led by the RPA Operations & Logistics Committee, the paper is a collaborative effort by member companies and invited experts to increase understanding of available technologies and assist suppliers and users of reusable packaging in exploring options that are right for their business.  New product and service innovations for reusable packaging such as pallets, bins and containers are offering breakthrough capabilities for asset management, supply chain visibility and real-time data capture.  From barcode label scanning to radio-frequency identification (RFID) to Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity, the growing availability of high-performance and cost-effective technologies is generating new opportunities for data insights, product applications, and higher-value packaging.

“Technology is quickly changing the performance capabilities of reusable packaging,” said Shawn Stockman of ReturnCenter, who served as project lead in his role as committee chair.  “Deploying smart packaging products by equipping them with sensors and tracking devices creates new business metrics and fuels the transformation to digital supply chains.”

The paper includes three primary sections:  general information on markings and labeling for product identification, sensors for monitoring product and content conditions, and communication devices for tracking product location and movement.  Actionable advice for evaluating solutions and developing a business case are also provided.  In addition, a definitions section offers clear explanations of industry, product and technology terms.

“RPA committees are designed to advance the common business interests of members by working collaboratively,” said Michael Wasson, RPA Chairman of the Board.  “The committee’s white paper on asset technologies is a great example of how members can come together and complete a project for industry education purposes.  The Board of Directors applaud the committee’s work under the leadership of Shawn Stockman.”

A panel moderated by Stockman with panelists Gail Peter Wong of AT&T IoT, David Kalan of Paxxal Inc., and Ernest Wood of C2it, Inc. will convene at Pack Expo Las Vegas, September 24, 2019, at 11:30 am in the Reusable Packaging Learning Center, to introduce the white paper and offer insights on technology applications and trends for reusable packaging.
