The use of bulk and mini-bulk refillable container formats for distributing beverages such as beer and wine is not new. In fact, the employment of kegs for wine dates back to the 2nd century BCE and the use of clay amphorae (amphoras) for wine storage and shipment goes back to ancient times, but that’s for another story. Dr. Diana Twede did some fascinating research in this area if you are interested. My point is that the potential for this set of proven solutions has yet to be adequately “tapped” by modern beverage supply chains.
Bulk formats, such as kegs and large-capacity totes, minimize the need for single-use bottles and cans, leading to fewer packaging materials produced, transported, and ultimately discarded. This shift cuts down on raw material consumption and lowers transportation costs and carbon emissions, as fewer trips are needed to move the same amount of product, a benefit that any leading drink manufacturer considers when designing scalable production and distribution strategies.
ecoSPIRITS and ecoTOTE™ Containers
A recent example of this opportunity is ecoSPIRITS, a company that has developed an innovative bulk packaging solution for shipping and serving alcohol. EcoSPIRITS’ circular packaging technology uses 4.5-litre glass ecoTOTE™ containers, which are reusable and significantly reduce waste and carbon emissions associated with traditional bottle packaging. This innovative approach supports sustainability and enhances supply chain efficiency by reducing the weight and volume of packaging materials.
Through strategic partnerships with major spirits brands like Pernod Ricard and Rémy Cointreau, ecoSPIRITS is demonstrating the transformative potential of refillable bulk beverage containers in the spirits industry, setting a new standard for sustainable and efficient beverage logistics. How Refillable Bulk Packaging Solutions Work for Liquor Distribution
A refillable bulk packaging solution involves using large, reusable containers instead of traditional single-use bottles for transporting and serving liquor. Here’s how it works, particularly for applications like supplying restaurants or airlines:
- Bulk Transport: Liquor is transported in large-capacity, reusable containers. For example, ecoSPIRITS uses 4.5-litre glass ecoTOTE™ containers. These containers are designed to hold significant quantities of liquor, reducing the number of individual bottles needed.
- Efficient Delivery: The bulk containers are delivered to the destination, such as a restaurant or an airline’s catering service. Fewer shipments are needed because these containers hold more liquor than single-use bottles, which optimizes transportation efficiency and reduces costs.
- Serving System: The bulk containers are connected to a dispensing system at the destination. For restaurants, this might involve a tap system allowing staff to pour drinks from the container easily. For airlines, it involves transferring the liquor into smaller, reusable serving bottles or directly into dispensing systems onboard the aircraft.
- Refill and Reuse: Once the container is empty, it is collected, cleaned, and refilled with more liquor. This cycle repeats multiple times, significantly reducing the need for new bottles and reducing waste. The robust containers are designed for many use cycles, ensuring durability and sustainability.
- Environmental Benefits: Refillable containers drastically reduce the amount of single-use glass or plastic waste. This lessens the environmental impact and lowers the carbon footprint associated with the production, transportation, and disposal of traditional packaging.
- Logistics and Handling: These bulk systems streamline logistics and handling. Fewer containers are needed to transport the same volume of liquor, reducing storage space requirements and simplifying inventory management.
Overall, refillable bulk packaging solutions enhance efficiency in the supply chain, reduce waste generation, and support sustainable business practices, making them an attractive option for industries like hospitality and aviation.

Another major brand, Pernod Ricard, recently agreed to a five-year global licensing agreement with ecoSPIRITS. It aims to expand the use of ecoSPIRITS’ circular packaging technology for its brands worldwide. Following a successful pilot in Singapore in late 2022, Pernod Ricard has begun deploying ecoSPIRITS’ 4.5-litre glass ecoTOTE™ containers in on-trade venues globally.
This partnership has already seen significant environmental benefits in Cuba, where the use of ecoSPIRITS technology at the Havana Club distillery is expected to reduce glass waste by 99% and cut the carbon emissions footprint by 88% related to premium spirits packaging and distribution.
“This next step in our partnership with ecoSPIRITS reflects our belief in the transformative power of this solution to enhance operational efficiency and reduce not only our environmental footprint, but the impact of our industry at large,” said Maria Pia De Caro, EVP Integrated Operations and Sustainability at Pernod Ricard. “We are excited to continue working together to refine, scale and champion ecoSPIRITS as the future of wine and spirits distribution.”

Rémy Cointreau has joined forces with ecoSPIRITS under a four-year global licensing agreement, expanding their collaboration from the UK to the USA. The initial UK pilot project introduced Cointreau liqueur and Mount Gay Eclipse rum in ecoTOTE™ format to select venues, significantly reducing single-use glass waste. This initiative will scale up, making these iconic brands available in closed-loop packaging across more markets.
The rollout in the USA will begin in Nevada, with plans to expand further. This partnership aligns with Rémy Cointreau’s Sustainable Exception roadmap, which includes ambitious goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and move towards Net Zero by 2050.
EcoSPIRITS’ innovative approach is not limited to traditional spirits distribution. The company has ventured into new markets, including the airline industry, with a recent collaboration with Bermuda Gin Co., Goslings Rum, and BermudAir. This initiative marks the first use of closed-loop spirits packaging on flights, significantly reducing waste and supporting local producers. The ecoTOTE™ containers used in these operations are collected, cleaned, and refilled, demonstrating the versatility and scalability of ecoSPIRITS’ solution.
The broader adoption of refillable bulk packaging solutions, such as those offered by ecoSPIRITS and seen in the beer and wine industries, promises a shift towards a more sustainable future. By reducing reliance on single-use packaging and embracing circular economy principles, the beverage industry can significantly minimize its environmental impact while supporting a positive consumer experience.
