On Site Pallet Pooling Depot Cuts Down on Greenhouse Gases – Just Add Milk

One of the challenges for one-way rental programs is the extra CO2 and cost related from transporting pallets to the pallet rental company depot when local delivery trucks are often already returning to the product supplier location and would be otherwise traveling empty. One potential alternative is for the pallet rental company to offer onsite repair at the customer, but this must be balanced against necessary economies of scale for repair and other costs of having a satellite operation.

Earlier this month, LPR, a leading European pallet pool operator, opened a new pallet repair facility at the Weetabix production site in Burton Latimer, near Kettering.

The £160,000 facility has the capacity to sort and repair over 25,000 of LPR’s distinctive red pallets each week. As a result, LPR and its supply chain partner, Norbert Dentressangle, are able to deliver greater efficiencies in pallet processing and reduce vehicle movements, as full loads of pallets are backhauled on Weetabix outbound deliveries thereby saving unnecessary vehicle movements each year.
