Ex-Pallet Business Owner Accused of Buying Stolen Postal Pallets

The former owner of an East Chicago pallet business was arrested last week after being charged with conspiring against the U.S. government and stealing government property.

According to indictment, as reported in the Chicago Post-Tribune, Sergio Magana owned Indiana Pallet Co. in August 2007 when he instructed an employee to pick up a truckload of pallets at Hardwood Pallet Inc. for return to Indiana Pallet. The pallets, allegedly stolen from the U.S. Postal Service, were valued at more than $5,000. The indictment does not indicate if anyone is charged with stealing the pallets.

The U.S. Postal Service and other segments of industry have struggled to avoid pallet loss in the past. Read Pallet and Container Theft Indictments: Shaping Public Opinion.
