Reusables to the Rescue: One More Way That Reusables Help Eliminate Solid Waste

Because we focus on the benefits of reusable transport packaging, including of course the elimination of packaging waste, we tend to neglect other important roles that reusables play. We should at least on occasion, however, emphasize the vital importance of reusable containers in the elimination of other, non-packaging waste.

Case in point of reusables to the rescue is the challenge of food and yard waste, a major component of household trash. In Calgary, this constitutes an estimated 60 percent of its municipal solid waste. With the launch of a pilot “Green Cart” organics recycling program, the community is already seeing a dramatic improvement with a 40 percent diversion from the trash to the recycling bin.
