Although the advent of digital media has transformed the newspaper industry itself, newsprint paper has retained an important role in packaging environments where flexibility, low weight, and straightforward handling are still valued. As companies seek ways to simplify packaging structures and integrate materials more effectively into established recycling systems, lightweight paper grades continue to offer practical advantages in many transportation and storage applications.

Finnish packaging manufacturer Carccu® is one example of a company working with these materials in modern logistics environments. The company supplies newsprint paper in both rolls and sheets for protective packaging use, where the material functions as interleaving paper, cushioning wrap, and box filler. Rather than serving as decorative retail packaging, newsprint is primarily used behind the scenes in supply chains where handling efficiency and predictable material performance matter on a large scale.
Reclaimed Newsprint Paper and Material Efficiency in Packaging
Protective packaging has a different role from that of retail-facing packaging. Instead of attracting the customer’s attention on a store shelf, its main purpose is to protect products during storage, transportation, and handling while remaining cost-efficient and easy to process. In these environments, lightweight materials can provide important operational benefits.
Newsprint paper is particularly valued for its flexibility and low basis weight. Carccu® products intended for protective packaging applications feature a grammage of 45 g/m², allowing the material to fold and wrap easily around goods while still offering sufficient cushioning for dry products during transportation.
The material’s low weight also supports transportation efficiency, especially in large-volume logistics operations where packaging weight can influence shipping costs over time. As the paper remains breathable and uncoated, it can also move smoothly through both manual and automated packaging lines without introducing unnecessary processing complexity.
At the same time, the limitations of the material are clearly defined. Newsprint paper isn’t intended for moisture-heavy or grease-intensive applications, nor is it designed for particularly heavy loads. Instead, its role is more specific: lightweight protective wrapping, void fill, and interleaving where flexibility and handling speed are prioritized.
Direct Printing Methods for Branding and Logistics Identification
Another reason newsprint remains widely used is its compatibility with recycled material flows. Reclaimed newsprint, sometimes referred to in Scandinavia as “mackle,” is commonly produced from recycled or non-prime-grade raw materials.
In practical terms, this allows for material streams that may no longer be suitable for high-visibility print products to continue functioning effectively in protective packaging applications. As many transportation packaging uses do not require visually perfect surfaces, reclaimed fiber grades can often provide adequate performance while supporting broader material efficiency goals.
This reflects a larger trend within packaging production, where businesses increasingly seek ways to extend material lifecycles and reduce unnecessary waste without compromising operational functionality. In logistics environments in particular, packaging decisions are often driven by practicality: whether a material performs reliably, integrates into workflows smoothly, and can be sourced consistently at scale.
Certification Systems and Traceability Requirements in Packaging Supply Chains
Protective packaging also increasingly serves the purposes of branding and identification. In warehousing and shipping operations, printed markings can help with product handling, logistics coordination, and brand visibility during deliveries.
Carccu® uses flexographic printing for larger newsprint production runs, allowing logos and tailored prints to be applied directly to paper materials. This reduces the need for separate labels or additional packaging components while keeping the packaging structure itself relatively simple.
As newsprint paper is uncoated and slightly absorbent, print design typically prioritizes clarity and contrast over highly detailed graphics. This suits its role within transportation and industrial packaging systems, where readability and functionality are generally more important than high-end visual presentation.
Printing directly onto paper materials also aligns with broader efforts to reduce unnecessary material combinations in packaging. Rather than attaching separate plastic labels or laminated branding elements, information can be integrated into the paper itself while maintaining a more uniform material structure.
Quality Management, Environmental Monitoring, and Production Control
Packaging manufacturers increasingly operate within structured management systems that guide quality control and environmental practices throughout production.
Carccu® operates under certified ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 management systems. ISO 9001 focuses on process control, documentation, corrective actions, and continuous improvement, while ISO 14001 structures environmental management through the monitoring of environmental aspects, the evaluation of compliance obligations, and the improvement of environmental performance over time.
These systems are especially relevant in packaging manufacturing because production often involves large material volumes and continuous industrial processes. This is why structured management can influence everything from material consistency and production efficiency to the handling of side streams, recycling practices, and waste-reduction measures.
According to Carccu® Managing Director Lasse Borg, certification also serves as external verification of operational responsibility. “Certification is proof through an external audit that we operate responsibly,” Borg stated.
In practice, this means that environmental considerations in packaging production are increasingly connected not only to the end material itself, but also to the way production processes are managed, documented, and monitored over time.
