Smart logistics meets sustainability as JD Logistics targets 127,000 tons in CO₂ reduction through adding half a million reusable cold chain delivery boxes.

On June 5, World Environment Day and the 8th anniversary of JD.com’s Green Stream Initiative, JD Logistics announced the deployment of 500,000 new insulated reusables for fresh product distribution. According to the company, this move marks the largest such rollout in the global logistics sector, reinforcing the company’s role as a sustainability leader in China’s booming express delivery market.
With China’s parcel volume surging past 174.5 billion in 2024, ranking first globally for the 11th year in a row, the environmental burden of single-use packaging continues to grow. JD Logistics is tackling this challenge head-on. “Each reuse cuts carbon emissions by approximately 850 grams,” the company stated in its announcement, estimating a reduction of 127,000 tons of CO₂ over the new boxes’ full lifecycle.
Smart Technology Powers Reusable Cold Chain Delivery Boxes
The upgraded boxes are designed for both performance and longevity. They support up to 300 reuse cycles, nearly double the lifespan of previous models, and have undergone rigorous insulation and drop testing. Improved seals also help better preserve product freshness during transit.
Each box is embedded with a barcode and RFID tag, which connect to JD Logistics’ proprietary circular packaging management system. This digital system enables real-time lifecycle tracking, including usage count, location, and condition.
As of 2024, JD Logistics had 960,000 reusable cold chain boxes in active circulation. These contributed to a carbon savings of 72,000 tons of CO₂ emissions in that year alone—an impact equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 77,000 households.
Aligning Supply Chain Sustainability with Consumer Events
The rollout of 500,000 units of reusable cold chain delivery boxes coincides with JD.com’s 618 Grand Promotion, the country’s largest mid-year shopping festival. JD Logistics has partnered with more than 300 fresh food brands to enable green delivery services during the high-volume campaign, turning what would typically be a high-waste event into a full-chain carbon reduction initiative.
This deployment builds on the success of JD.com’s Green Stream Initiative, launched in 2017. The initiative reflects JD’s long-term commitment to environmental stewardship in logistics. By advancing a holistic set of sustainable supply chain practices—from AI-powered route optimization and green energy adoption to recyclable packaging and smart transportation—JD continues to set new industry benchmarks.
The company has also emphasized the broader business case for sustainability, linking its green logistics innovations to efficiency gains, customer trust, and regulatory alignment in China’s rapidly evolving e-commerce ecosystem.
China Leads on Express Delivery, Faces Packaging Challenges
China’s express delivery volume has exploded in recent years, and 2024 marked yet another record. But the rise in package volume has exacerbated waste and carbon emissions. Traditional packaging materials are often not recycled and can be difficult to collect from end users.
JD Logistics’ answer lies in a closed-loop packaging system that minimizes waste and provides clear tracking. According to the company, earlier reusable cold chain delivery boxes had a more limited service life. By extending the number of use cycles and improving the preservation technology, JD Logistics is both enhancing environmental performance and preserving the product integrity that consumers demand.
Looking ahead, JD Logistics intends to scale further. The company indicated that it will continue to expand partnerships with upstream and downstream partners to build a “next-generation, environmentally responsible supply chain.”
