What is an RPC service center?
The energy-efficient IFCO RPC service centers are equipped with cutting-edge machinery featuring state-of-the-art wash lines, centrifugal drying, and advanced automation technologies. IFCO’s proprietary SmartGuardian™ guarantees that all processes across the automated system uphold stringent international sanitation requirements, ensuring the highest standards of product quality and safety.
IFCO service centers are integral to maintaining the efficiency, hygiene, and sustainability of the RPC system. They ensure that the containers are in optimal condition for reuse, thereby supporting a circular economy model and reducing environmental impact.
Generally speaking, RPC service centers play a crucial role in managing and operating reusable plastic containers (RPCs). These centers are strategically located to support the lifecycle of RPCs used in transporting and storing fresh produce, meats, and other perishable items. Typical RPC service centre activities include receiving used RPCs, sorting and inspection, washing and sanitizing, drying, repair, quality assurance and repackaging for distribution.
“This strategic investment reflects our long-term commitment to the UK market and our dedication to meeting the evolving needs of our customers,” commented IFCO CEO Michael Pooley, speaking of the infrastructure improvements. “It marks a significant milestone in our company’s expansion and ongoing efforts to deliver innovative, sustainable packaging solutions and superior customer service.”
“Combined, our service centers in the UK have an extended capacity of servicing over 400 million units per year,” commented Dirk Schaich, IFCO’s Supply Chain Director for Northern Europe. “This enables IFCO to meet the future growth needs of existing and future customers. By upgrading and enlarging our facilities, we aim to provide them with even better service, higher quality, and increased operational efficiency.”

IFCO (International Food Container Organization) is a global provider of reusable packaging solutions, specifically focusing on Reusable Plastic Containers (RPCs) for the fresh food sector. The company’s mission is to offer efficient, sustainable packaging solutions that improve supply chain efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
Founded in 1992, IFCO operates in over 50 countries and serves a wide range of customers, including growers, producers, and retailers. The company’s RPCs are used extensively for the transportation and storage of fresh produce, meats, and other perishable goods. These containers are designed to be durable, hygienic, and environmentally friendly, contributing to significant reductions in waste compared to single-use packaging.
IFCO emphasizes a circular economy model, where RPCs are continually washed, repaired, and reused, minimizing waste and energy consumption throughout the supply chain. Their services include managing the entire lifecycle of the containers, from issuance to retrieval, cleaning, and redistribution, ensuring that RPCs are maintained in optimal condition for repeated use. This model enhances supply chain efficiency and aligns with global sustainability goals by reducing carbon footprints and packaging waste.
