HENKEL and CAPSA FOOD will share a duo trailer on a common route and thus save up to 115 tons of CO2 emissions per year
Madrid, Spain, March 16, 2021 – CHEP, the specialist in end-to-end supply chains in the FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) and retail sector, is once again demonstrating its commitment to reducing carbon emissions: The company has a transport -Collaboration project orchestrated between the global chemical and consumer goods company Henkel and CAPSA FOOD, the leading company in the Spanish dairy market.
The project is part of CHEP’s Collaborative Transport Solutions, a program to optimize logistics. It combines the company’s unique insight into millions of transport movements by its customers and the power of big data. Synergies and potentials for the joint use of transport both between customers and with CHEP can be identified in this way. The program has been running for six years and involves more than 220 of CHEP’s European customers.

In this collaboration, the transport is shared via a duo trailer, a combination of a tractor unit with two standard trailers. This transport solution is considered to be the largest in Europe by land. With a total length of 31.75 meters, the Duo Trailer can reduce CO2 emissions per trip by 25% to 30% compared to transporting the same cargo with conventional trucks.
Eugenio Vila, Purchasing Logistics South Europe at Henkel, reports: “Participating in this project is an exciting step towards logistical cooperation for us. Thanks to the Duo Trailer, we can reduce our carbon emissions and at the same time accommodate twice as large a load in a truck as with conventional trucks. With the help of this solution, we are further optimizing our transport routes. ”
As part of the collaboration, Henkel and CAPSA FOOD share the duo trailer for three runs per week for transports and deliveries on the route between Madrid and Catalonia. On the outward journey, the duo trailer is loaded with the products of one company, on the return journey with those of the other. With a capacity for 66 Euro pallet spaces and 48 tonnes, the Duo-Trailer can reduce 250,000 empty kilometers per year, which means around 115 tonnes less CO2 emissions.
“In a world where demand is constantly growing and environmental impact must be reduced, it is of key importance for FMCG companies to cultivate a culture of collaboration,” says Adrián Fariña, Transport Manager at CAPSA FOOD.
CHEP’s Collaborative Transport Solutions are part of the Zero Waste World Program (ZWW), which brings together leading retailers and manufacturers to build smarter and more sustainable supply chains. In addition to reducing empty kilometers, ZWW focuses on avoiding physical waste and eliminating inefficiencies in the supply chain through digitization.
“We are very pleased with the promising results of our duo trailer project. We want to promote circular supply chains with our products, solutions and customer collaborations and want to inspire even more partners around the world for such projects, ”comments Michael Gierloff, Director of Transportation at CHEP Europe.
