The global tea packaging machine market is expected to shift from a preference for tea bags to pouches during the forecast period.

The global tea packaging machine market is projected to reach a value of nearly $1.4 billion in 2024 and grow to almost $2 billion (USD 1,941.9 million) by 2034, at a CAGR of 3.4%. In 2023, the market generated over $1.3 billion in revenue and is expected to exhibit a year-over-year growth of 2.9% in 2024.
Tea packaging machine filling and dosing equipment segment
The filling and dosing equipment segment is forecasted to achieve $265 million in 2024, growing at a CAGR of 4.2%. Tea bag filling and dosing equipment are specialized machines designed to automate the process of filling tea bags with precise amounts of tea. These machines ensure consistency and efficiency in tea production by accurately measuring and dispensing the tea leaves into bags. The equipment typically includes a series of hoppers, conveyors, and weighing systems that work together to handle bulk tea, measure it to the desired weight, and fill it into pre-formed tea bags. This process minimizes human error, reduces labor costs, and maintains high standards of hygiene and quality control in the production of tea bags.
Tea pouches to increase in importance vs tea bags
Bags will dominate the market initially, but pouches are expected to lead in the latter half of the forecast period. Pouches are gaining traction due to their lightweight, flexible, and customizable nature, offering significant growth opportunities.
The primary difference between a tea bag and a tea pouch lies in their design and the quality of their tea-drinking experience. Tea bags are small, typically rectangular or square, and are made from paper, silk, or plastic. They are designed for single use and are very convenient: you simply place the bag in hot water to steep the tea. On the other hand, tea pouches are often larger and made from higher-quality materials such as biodegradable mesh or cloth. These pouches come in various shapes, including spacious designs that allow the tea leaves to unfurl fully, which can result in a more robust and flavorful brew. While tea bags and pouches serve the same fundamental purpose, pouches generally provide a superior tea experience due to their size and the quality of materials used.
Semi-automated tea packaging machines
Semi-automatic tea packaging machines are projected to hold 38.5% of the market share in 2024, with a CAGR of 2.9%. Semi-automatic tea packaging machines differ from fully automated machines primarily in the level of human intervention required during the packaging process. While fully automated machines handle the entire process—from filling and sealing to labeling and packaging—semi-automatic machines require some manual input, such as placing the bags in the machine or initiating certain steps. This makes semi-automatic machines more affordable and simpler to operate, which is advantageous for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that may not have the capital or technical expertise for fully automated systems. Additionally, semi-automatic machines offer greater flexibility and control, allowing SMEs to adapt quickly to different packaging needs and batch sizes without the need for extensive training or maintenance.
Rising awareness of tea’s health benefits, such as weight management and stress reduction, is boosting tea consumption and driving the demand for tea packaging machines. Packaged tea’s convenience is also gaining popularity, catering to the busy lifestyles and health-conscious choices of modern consumers.
Automation enhances efficiency and precision in tea packaging, minimizing errors and optimizing resource utilization. Advanced technologies like sensors, vision systems, and robotic arms ensure consistent packaging quality and higher production volumes.
Sustainability and rea vag microplastics concerns
However, the shift towards sustainable materials poses challenges for manufacturers and equipment suppliers. Sourcing eco-friendly materials that meet packaging requirements, such as compostable films and recycled paper boards, is difficult. Optimizing designs to reduce material usage while maintaining product safety adds complexity.
Additionally, concerns about microplastic shedding have also surfaced. Awareness of microplastics being released from tea bags has centered around the discovery that some tea bags, particularly those made from plastic or sealed with plastic, can shed billions of microplastic particles into the tea during brewing. Studies have found that when exposed to hot water, these plastic tea bags release tiny particles into the beverage, often invisible to the naked eye. These microplastics can then be ingested by the consumer.
The potential health impacts of ingesting microplastics are not yet fully understood, but there are concerns about their effects on the human body, including potential toxicity and the ability to carry harmful substances. As a result, there has been a push for greater transparency from tea manufacturers about the materials used in their products and a call for a shift towards biodegradable and natural alternatives to reduce microplastic pollution.
