DS Smith Helped Northampton Growers Make the Switch to Greencoat®, Produce Packaging that Performs

October 15, 2018 By Rick LeBlanc

DS Smith North America Packaging and Paper Division to showcase Northampton Growers at the 2018 Produce Marketing Association (PMA) Fresh Summit Conference & Expo from October 19-20 in Orlando, FL, specifically their impactful decision to switch to Greencoat’s wax-free packaging.

Northampton Growers, a respected U.S. supplier, began receiving requests from customers that they deliver their produce in more sustainable packaging. They needed to find recyclable packaging that stood up to cabbage, a heavy, oddly shaped item to pack in boxes.

They found DS smith’s Greencoat solution – wax replacement packaging that is not only fully recyclable while still featuring high-end graphic offerings – but fully meets their performance needs. The Greencoat team worked with Northampton and their customers to perform tests to ensure the packaging would hold up throughout their long shipment journey.

“When we were starting this, we said, if you can get packaging that will withstand the weight for the same or better price, then growers will go for it. Greencoat has fulfilled all those requirements,” said Calvert Cullen, Sales & Co-Owner of Northampton Growers.

As a result, Northampton Growers has saved tons of waste from going into landfills thanks to recyclability of Greencoat, and customer satisfaction has increased as well. Since produce arrives in fresh condition and the packaging is recyclable, their customers are happy on multiple fronts.

“Greencoat provides farmers with a fully recyclable option that performs as well as wax in cold and wet environments, from the packing shed to the customer,” said Jeff Cormier, Global Sales Manager for DS Smith North America Packaging and Paper Division. “For Northampton Growers, their box is their brand, and we’re excited to share their story with other farmers at Fresh Summit this year. When every box counts, we’re thrilled that Northampton chooses Greencoat.”

DS Smith North America Packaging and Paper Division will be showcasing produce packaging that performs at the 2018 Produce Marketing Association (PMA) Fresh Summit Conference & Expo from October 19-20 in Orlando, FL.
