The Pallet LOOP, the UK’s first circular economy pallet reuse scheme for the construction industry, has announced a major expansion of its partnership with British Gypsum, one of the country’s leading building materials manufacturers. As of early 2025, 90% of British Gypsum’s products are now being distributed on The Pallet LOOP’s distinctive green pallets.
This milestone follows the introduction of additional pallet specifications, which now accommodate a wider range of British Gypsum’s plasterboard products. The company initially adopted The Pallet LOOP in May 2024, using it to distribute bagged plaster. Less than a year later, the initiative has grown significantly, with LOOP pallets playing a central role in reducing waste, cost, and carbon emissions across the construction supply chain.
Scaling Up a Nationwide Pallet Reuse System
Since its launch, The Pallet LOOP has issued more than 700,000 reusable pallets, which are collected, repaired, and reused rather than discarded after a single use. The LOOP model, part of the BSW Group, is designed to address the construction sector’s pallet waste crisis, which generates an estimated 18 million tonnes of wood waste annually. By offering a closed-loop alternative, The Pallet LOOP is helping businesses meet government sustainability targets and reduce their carbon footprints.
A growing number of builders’ merchants, housebuilders, and principal contractors are now adopting The Pallet LOOP service, recognizing the financial and environmental benefits. The company has established more than 7,000 collection points across the UK, making pallet returns more accessible than ever.
Pallet recovery rates have been particularly strong. In November and December 2024, 30 percent of LOOP pallets were successfully recovered and returned for reuse—three times the industry average return rate of 10 percent. This higher recovery rate is key to cutting waste and reducing reliance on new pallet production, a significant contributor to carbon emissions in the supply chain.
Financial and Environmental Benefits Drive Adoption
The Pallet LOOP not only simplifies pallet recovery but also provides a direct financial incentive for businesses to participate. Its PayBack scheme offers up to £4 per returned LOOP pallet, creating a cost-saving opportunity while promoting sustainable practices. By returning pallets, businesses can offset operational costs while supporting a more responsible approach to materials handling.
Steve Ottaway, head of operations at The Pallet LOOP, said the early success of the program demonstrates the industry’s appetite for change.
“From a standing start, we are delighted with what we have achieved with our pallet collection rates,” he said. “As well as demonstrating the effectiveness of a closed-loop pallet collection system, our return rates underscore the willingness of all parts of the construction industry to embrace a different way of working.
“We are grateful to those companies already using the service and look forward to growing our collections figures this year as more building material manufacturers choose to adopt The Pallet LOOP.”
This momentum reflects a wider shift in the construction sector toward sustainability. With waste regulations tightening and corporate ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) commitments rising, circular economy solutions like The Pallet LOOP are gaining traction.
A Growing Presence in the UK Construction Supply Chain
The Pallet LOOP operates a network of pallet manufacturing and collection hubs, working closely with Scott Pallets, one of the UK’s largest pallet manufacturers and recyclers. This collaboration ensures a robust infrastructure for pallet recovery, refurbishment, and redistribution, making circular reuse a viable long-term solution for the industry.
British Gypsum’s deeper integration with The Pallet LOOP signals that major building materials suppliers are increasingly prioritizing reuse systems over the traditional single-use, waste-heavy pallet model. As more manufacturers, merchants, and contractors adopt The Pallet LOOP, the potential waste reduction and carbon savings for the UK construction industry could be substantial.
How to Participate in The Pallet LOOP
Companies that want to return LOOP pallets for reuse can register for a collections account by emailing setmeup@thepalletloop.com or calling 0800 024 6130. Once set up, businesses can book pallet collections by calling the same number or emailing collections@thepalletloop.com.
