HELSINGBORG, Sweden — Boxon has received the Packnews Special Prize (Editor’s Award) at the Packnorth Award for its rPET Big Bag, an industrial bulk packaging solution made from 100% recycled PET bottles.
The award recognizes a packaging solution that combines recycled content with demanding performance requirements, including approval for direct food contact. Boxon says the rPET Big Bag has up to a 50% lower carbon footprint than comparable bags manufactured from virgin polypropylene, based on supplier data. “We are very proud to receive this award. With the rPET Big Bag, we wanted to show that using more recycled material does not have to mean compromising on performance. It is a solution that combines the circularity principle of upstream material circulation with the high demands our customers have on safety, durability and functionality,” said Andrea Stoltz, Category Manager at Boxon.
Beyond its recycled content, Boxon says the rPET Big Bag offers improved UV resistance, abrasion resistance and dimensional stability during transport and handling. The material can withstand temperatures ranging from -20°C to +140°C and is suitable for food, chemical and other demanding industrial applications.
Improved print quality also enables clearer labeling and better traceability, an important consideration in regulated supply chains.
Approval for direct food contact expands the potential use of recycled material into applications where safety and material performance are particularly important. According to Boxon, the bag’s durability can support reuse within customer operations, while its PET composition allows recycling through appropriate plastic recycling streams.
The Packnorth jury cited the product as an example of how recycled polymers can be combined with functionality, food safety and traceability in demanding industrial applications. The jury also highlighted the reported 50% reduction in carbon footprint.
“This recognition confirms that sustainability and performance can go hand in hand. For us, it is also about making it easier for our customers to make more sustainable packaging choices that work in their everyday operations,” Stoltz said.
The rPET Big Bag is part of Boxon’s broader effort to develop packaging solutions that reduce environmental impact while meeting requirements for performance, safety and compliance.
