Automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) market to continue robust growth.

This April, Swisslog, a leading provider of best-in-class intralogistics warehouse automation and software, announced that Walmart would install a Swisslog automation solution within its Robinson, TX, facility to enable seamless material flow and increase uptime. Walmart plans to break ground on the milk processing facility later this year and open it in 2026.
The announcement marks the third Walmart milk processing facility to deploy Swisslog’s automated storage and retrieval solution (ASRS) featuring SynQ software and Vectura cranes. The company worked with Swisslog to open its first milk processing facility in Fort Wayne, IN, in 2018. This facility served as a blueprint for its second facility in Valdosta, GA, expected to open in 2025, as well as for the just-announced Texas facility.
Such announcements are becoming increasingly common. Although AS/RS systems date back to the 1960s, increasing staffing and warehouse space, along with the need for better accuracy and higher throughput, have resulted in fresh interest in this category of automation. According to Research and Markets, the global automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) market, valued at USD 7.5 billion in 2022, is projected to reach USD 13 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 7.1% during the forecast period.
AS/RS technology has transformed the logistics and supply chain landscape, providing efficient and space-saving solutions for storing and retrieving goods. These systems leverage advanced robotics, sensors, and software to streamline warehouse operations, optimize storage space, reduce labor costs, and minimize errors, significantly enhancing overall efficiency.
What Are AS/RS?
Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (AS/RS) are advanced, computer-controlled systems that automatically place and retrieve loads from specific storage locations. These systems utilize a combination of technologies such as robotics, sensors, and software to optimize warehouse operations. The primary function of AS/RS is to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of inventory management by automating the storage and retrieval processes, thereby reducing the need for manual labor and minimizing human errors.
AS/RS can handle various load types, ranging from small parts in bins to large pallets and bulky items. They are used in various industries, including e-commerce, automotive, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing, to improve order fulfillment speed, increase storage density, and ensure precise inventory tracking. By integrating AS/RS, businesses can achieve significant space savings, lower operational costs, and improved overall efficiency in their logistics and supply chain operations.
Types of AS/RS
AS/RS systems come in various types, each catering to different storage and retrieval needs. The primary types include:
- Unit Load AS/RS: Designed to handle large items like pallets and bulky goods, these systems can manage loads ranging from 1,000 to 5,000 pounds, with higher capacities available. They are ideal for high-density storage and optimizing vertical space, providing substantial space savings and improved labor efficiency through automation.
- Mini Load AS/RS: Suitable for smaller items and high-density storage, mini load systems are used in applications requiring the handling of small parts and products, often seen in retail and e-commerce.
- Vertical Lift Modules (VLMs): These systems store items in vertical stacks and use an extractor to retrieve items, optimizing floor space by utilizing vertical storage.
- Carousels: Comprising horizontal and vertical carousels, these systems rotate to bring the required item to the operator, reducing retrieval times and improving efficiency.
- Mid Load AS/RS: These systems handle intermediate load sizes and are used in operations that require the handling of medium-weight items.
Historical Development and Market Drivers
The concept of AS/RS systems dates back to the 1960s when the first automated storage solutions were developed to enhance warehouse efficiency and reduce manual labor. Over the decades, advancements in robotics, sensor technology, and software have significantly improved these systems’ capabilities and reliability.
Key drivers influencing the adoption of AS/RS systems include the need for space optimization, the demand for faster and more accurate operations, rising labor costs, technological advancements, and environmental concerns. The explosive growth of e-commerce has particularly fueled demand for AS/RS solutions as companies strive to meet the high expectations for swift and accurate order fulfillment.
Market Value and Growth Projections

According to various sources, the global AS/RS market was valued at USD 7.5 billion in 2022 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.1% to reach USD 13 billion by 2030. According to Polaris Market Research, the unit load AS/RS segment held the largest revenue share of 23.8% in 2022, and it is projected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5%, reaching USD 4.6 billion by the end of the analysis period.
The mini load segment is expected to grow at a revised CAGR of 6.8%, reflecting the increasing demand for efficiently handling smaller items. The e-commerce segment is anticipated to witness the fastest growth, with a CAGR of 8.8% during the forecast period, driven by the need for efficient and accurate inventory management in the rapidly expanding online retail sector.
Regional Variations and Market Outlook
Geographically, North America dominated the AS/RS market with a 33.5% share in 2022, owing to a well-established retail industry and the presence of major e-commerce players like Amazon. The U.S. market alone was valued at USD 1.7 billion in 2022. Europe, led by Germany, and Asia-Pacific, particularly China, India, and Japan, are also significant contributors to the market. China is forecast to grow at an 8.4% CAGR, driven by rapid industrialization and the booming e-commerce sector.
The Asia-Pacific region is poised to experience the fastest growth in the AS/RS market throughout the forecast period. This growth is attributed to expanding infrastructure, industrial activities, and significant investments in automation to reduce operational costs and enhance efficiency.
Conclusion
The AS/RS market is set for robust growth, driven by the increasing need for efficient, space-saving storage solutions across various industries. The unit load segment, in particular, is expected to continue its dominance due to its ability to handle large and bulky items efficiently. As businesses such as Walmart seek to optimize their supply chains and reduce operational costs, the adoption of AS/RS systems is likely to accelerate, making it a pivotal technology in the future of warehouse management and logistics.
