Smart Green Pallet adoption is accelerating at Auchan, with a 50,000-unit rollout that highlights the growing role of connected reusable packaging in reducing shrink and improving logistics reliability.

Auchan, one of France’s largest grocery retailers, is rolling out 50,000 IBM Smart Green Pallets (SGP) across its logistics network after a successful pilot that demonstrated strong gains in visibility, product quality assurance, and carbon reduction. The decision places Auchan among the earliest large retailers in Europe to adopt reusable smart pallets at scale.
The pallet model, a fully recyclable plastic design fitted with IoT sensors, monitors geolocation, temperature, and shocks throughout the handling cycle. IBM Consulting developed the system to help Auchan improve traceability, strengthen food quality controls, and reduce operational waste. The unit itself is a recycled plastic pallet, made in France, repairable, and recyclable 6 times with the same quality of use. Pallet weight: 17 kg or 37.4 lbs., with an estimated lifespan of 10 years.
A pilot using 10,000 connected pallets in two warehouses and four stores showed that continuous monitoring can significantly reduce spoilage and deviations in the cold chain. According to the release, food waste can represent up to 5% of logistics-related carbon emissions in France.
A Strategic Move Beyond the Pallet Itself
Plastic pallets are commonly used around the world. They are more popular in some Asian countries such as Japan and Korea. Regarding Japan, operators such as Japan Pallet Rental have RFID tagged most if not all of their pallet fleets. In North America, smart plastic pallets are offered by pallet rental provider iGPS. Other plastic pallet pools of note include Perfect Pallets.
Plastic pallets are also widely used in downstream retail distribution, as well as in applications such as postal and automated material handling systems, where their consistent dimensions and cleanability make them a suitable fit. Auchan appears to be using the Smart Green Pallets in its downstream distribution flows, where product quality and load integrity are tightly linked to temperature and handling conditions.
What makes this project noteworthy is not simply the switch to plastic pallets, but the elevation of the pallet into a live data platform. While smart pallets remain a niche segment, Auchan’s deployment hints at broader value: real-time visibility that prevents waste, reduces labor hours spent investigating claims, and strengthens cold-chain assurance across the network.

Improving Quality and Reducing Waste Through Data
The Smart Green Pallet’s sensors detect temperature excursions, shocks, and other conditions that can harm product quality. When abnormalities occur, alerts are sent directly to operational teams.
The company notes that the pallets can detect “various factors likely to have a negative impact on the quality of goods in transit,” from impacts to temperature deviations.
This granular visibility enables much faster root-cause analysis. Instead of investigating a spoiled shipment after the fact, Auchan teams can now identify where and when a temperature deviation occurred and take corrective action before it results in shrinkage or out-of-stocks.
Lighter, Safer, and Lower Carbon
The Smart Green Pallet’s recyclable plastic structure is also one-third lighter than a traditional wooden pallet, reducing strain for workers and improving manual handling ergonomics.
Auchan frames the initiative as a key sustainability step. “With the Smart Green Pallets, we are taking a new step toward a responsible supply chain, one that meets operational requirements while supporting our environmental commitments,” said Franck Descamps, Director of Appro Logistique France at Auchan.
IBM estimates that replacing a wooden pallet with a Smart Green Pallet could avoid over 21,000 tonnes of CO₂ over eight years, driven by durability, improved rotation efficiency, fewer repairs, and reduced spoilage.
A New Standard for Data-Driven Retail Logistics?
IBM sees the Smart Green Pallet as a significant evolution in logistics technology. “The IBM Smart Green Pallet is a new standard for the retail sector,” said Alex Bauer, General Manager of IBM Consulting France. “It offers a concrete response to challenges around food safety, operational efficiency, and ESG performance.”
While many smart pallet initiatives are still in the pilot stage globally, Auchan’s scale, 50,000 units to start, suggests momentum is building. If retailers increasingly quantify the value of reduced waste, fewer service failures, and better product quality, smart platforms could shift from niche to mainstream.
The project recently earned a France 2030 “Logistique 4.0” award, highlighting its relevance to national supply chain modernization goals.
