New capital and leadership transition come as the company adapts to mounting market pressures and evolving ownership structure

48forty Solutions, one of North America’s largest wood pallet management services providers, has completed a significant financial restructuring designed to strengthen its balance sheet and support future growth initiatives. The deal, announced Jan. 15, 2026, reduces the company’s debt by over 80% and injects $75 million of fresh capital. Investment funds managed by lenders, including Antares and KKR, will become majority equity holders under the terms of the agreement.
The transaction comes at a pivotal point for the company, following a period of market pressure, lender involvement, and changes in ownership that have been documented over recent years. Earlier industry coverage highlighted how private credit firms were increasingly positioned to take control of 48forty as broader economic headwinds affected performance.
A series of proposed restructuring plans was also reported last year as 48forty navigated operational and financial challenges, reflecting the complexity of managing a large, diversified pallet services network in a fluctuating logistics marketplace.
Leadership Transition
In connection with the transaction, CEO Mike Hachtman is retiring and stepping down from his role, and Dave Russell, previously a board observer, has been appointed Interim CEO. Russell brings more than 20 years of leadership and advisory experience in the pallet and container solutions space, including with IFCO Systems North America, and will help guide the company through the next phase as a permanent CEO search is conducted.
“We are pleased to complete this transaction and to have support from a leading group of investors. We appreciate Mike’s contributions to helping us get to this important moment and wish him the best in his future endeavors,” said Jame Donath, Chair of 48forty’s Board of Directors. “Having an industry veteran of Dave’s caliber stepping into the Interim CEO role gives us confidence that 48forty is in the right hands as we search for its next leader.”
Russell echoed this sentiment in his remarks: “I’m pleased to step into the role of Interim CEO at this important moment for the Company,” he said. “With the restructuring now complete, the business has a more stable financial foundation and greater flexibility to move forward. My focus will be on supporting the team, maintaining continuity for our customers and partners, and helping position the Company for its next phase.”
Hachtman, reflecting on his time with the company, added: “It has been a privilege to lead 48forty over the last five years, and I’m proud of the work the team has done to complete this transaction. I want to thank our employees, customers, and partners for their commitment and support, and look forward to seeing the progress and achievements that 48forty makes in the years to come.”
