Status of Impending ISPM-15 Implementation Between Canada and the U.S.

When it comes to the removal of the ISPM-15 exemption between Canada and the U.S., and the 300 million pallets per year that move back and forth across the border, the phase-in should already have been in progress, according to the original plan. This has not been the case, however. Commenting from the WPA Annual Meeting this week in Rancho Mirage, California, NWPCA’s Karen Wanamaker, V.P. Industry &. Govt. Affairs and President/CEO Bruce Scholnick answered that Canada is ready to implement, but that the U.S. has not yet agreed to initiate the phased elimination of the ISPM-15 exemption, which would subsequently require that all timber pallets moving between the two countries be treated in accordance with ISPM-15 requirements.
