With a product shrink of 30 percent attributed to poor post harvest handling practices, Sri Lanka has mandated the use of plastic crates. Following the effective date, 40 trucks transporting vegetables without the use of plastic crates were taken into custody by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) during a subsequent raid.
Fifteen lorry owners transporting vegetables to Colombo without using plastic crates were produced before the Avissawella and Maligawatte courts yesterday and fined Rs. 8,000 each.
