Jel Sert Switches to CHEP Half Pallets, Achieves 100% Customer Satisfaction

  • Collaboration leads to improved quality, increased efficiency, reduced product damage and greater sustainability benefits for Jel Sert.
  • Jel Sert avoided 100,000 pounds of CO2 and nearly 130,000 pounds of solid waste with use of CHEP platforms.

Jel Sert is known as the “makers of fun foods” like freezer bars, desserts, and beverages. The company was founded in 1926 and remains one of the few large, privately held, family-owned companies around today. It operates in the United States, producing food and beverages that are distributed internationally to some of the biggest retailers in the world.

But there was nothing fun about the recycled half pallets it used to ship 100,000 cases of product annually to some of the biggest retailers in the world. The recycled pallets, with their inconsistent quality and unappealing appearance. In addition, they did not provide adequate top deck coverage. As a result, product damage was occurring during transit and unloading.  Retailers began to complain about both the damage problems and the unsightly appearance of the inconsistent recycled half pallets. They simply didn’t look appealing as endcap displays.

To address the issue, Jel Sert called on CHEP, a longtime provider of choice for the company. Michael Martinez, Vice President of Customer Service and Distribution for Jel Sert, sought a better half pallet solution – one that would “complete the professional appearance of our products and show as a display-ready pallet for our retailers.”

The CHEP team traveled to Jel Sert to discuss the situation, demonstrate the CHEP 40×24-inch half pallet solution, and give the Jel Sert team a “hands on” opportunity to test the pallets.

After that initial meeting, the Jel Sert and CHEP teams – building on their long and successful relationship – worked together to implement the new half pallet solution. As part of the process, Jel Sert had an opportunity for a trial run with CHEP’s half pallet. The samples used during the trial proved to Jel Sert that consistency matters: The reliable quality of the CHEP half pallets delivered marked operational efficiencies compared to the inconsistent recycled half pallets Jel Sert had been using.

“The trial was a natural outcrop of our fantastic, long-term business relationship,” Michael said. “CHEP is a provider of choice for Jel Sert and has been over the last decade. CHEP continues to be a strategic partner in providing multi-faceted solutions in the most cost-efficient manner, ultimately satisfying internal and external supply chain challenges.”

Michael continued, “CHEP’s half pallet completes the professional appearance of our products, and shows as a display-ready pallet for our retailers.”

In addition, Jel Sert’s utilization of CHEP pallets has eliminated product damage and customer complaints during the last two years. By implementing both CHEP shared block pallets and half pallets, Jel Sert has strengthened its sustainability program by avoiding 100,000 pounds of CO2 and nearly 130,000 pounds of solid waste.

“Building a more efficient and sustainable supply chain is what CHEP is all about,” said Todd Hoff, Vice President of Marketing and Customer Solutions, CHEP North America. “As this project proved, innovative solutions and a better supply chain are not possible without strong collaboration between trading partners.”
