IFCO Shares Global Best Practices: Packaging Standardization Enhances Benefits of Automation for Retailers

(Las Vegas, NV)  Josh Kling, IFCO’s Strategic Market Development Manager, told a gathering of food, beverage and consumer packaged goods executives that standardization and packaging optimization in e-commerce order fulfillment leads to greater efficiency, increased sales and greater customer satisfaction for grocery retailers.

“Online shopping in the US is expected to grow 21% annually over the next three years,” said Mr. Kling.  IFCO’s experience with European retailers with thriving e-commerce businesses shows that standardized packaging such as PRCs enables more efficient order fulfillment, boosting sales, reducing costs and increasing customer satisfaction.”

Retailers that implement e-commerce fulfillment strategies based on standardized packaging systems will:

  • Increase labor efficiencies
  • Enhance automation capabilities
  • Reduce complexity, allowing more time to plan and prepare
  • Benefit from consistent packs and pallet configurations

Kling’s presentation, “What’s in Store for Automation in the Fresh Product Supply Chain,” was presented to industry executives at the Reusables Learning Center at Pack Expo, one of the largest industry gatherings of more than 30,000 industry professionals.

The role of standardized reusable packaging enables retailers to shift to more efficient automation. Automated systems for order fulfillment have become increasingly robust, with better design for productivity, ergonomics and the added benefit of waste reduction.

“Retailers that transition quickly to standardized packaging and increased automation will increase sales and win with consumers, while those that delay risk losing market share in the rapidly growing e-commerce channel,” concluded Mr.Kling.
